TERMS DHA and ARA may be familiar, especially among parents who have babies. DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachinoid acid) is an essential fatty acid (essential) and is required for infant brain development and visual acuity.
Can not be denied that the community began to recognize the term of this fatty acid instead of formula milk advertising, where almost all manufacturers compete to increase the content of these two types of fatty acids in each product. Typically, infant formula containing DHA and ARA relative price is more expensive than that do not contain these fatty acids.
In fact, DHA and ARA are actually two of the many types of essential nutrients that are naturally present in many of Mother's Milk. Even when compared to formula milk enriched these two fatty acids, DHA and ARA content in breast milk is far better in quality and quantity.
¨ DHA and ARA is widely available in milk with a composition that is very balanced and best suited for infants. So to say, milk is a source of DHA and ARA are best and can not be matched by any formula milk, ¨ said Dr.. Hardiono D Pusponegoro, SpA (K), of the Division of Child Neurology Department of Pediatrics Faculty of medicine / RSCM, in Jakarta on Tuesday (25 / 3).
Dr. Hardiono states, though there are many who claim to supply infant formula containing DHA and ARA, but not necessarily going to give the best effect and maximum for brain growth and intelligence of children.
Nearly all manufacturers of infant formula include a variety of objects in its products but the amount in small increments. And if the ratio of DHA and ARA in infant formula is not exact, the result will not be good for children. Intelligence will not increase, ¨ he said.
While the ASI, Dr. Hardiono, the content of DHA and ARA are naturally adapted to the composition. Percentage of two types of fatty acids is highly variable according to a study. But for Indonesia, the numbers are not much different from neighboring countries like Malaysia.
¨ Yes, about 0.4 or 0.5% of total fatty acids. But even small amounts of DHA and ARA is important in intellectual development and the child's vision, ¨ he added.
Dr. Hardiono reminded that breastfeeding is the best natural source of nutrition for infants. Children who get breast milk from mothers in general development of the brain and nerve tissue is better than a formula.
Through breastfeeding, the baby will get DHA and ARA are required as the main component of cell membranes and fat is unsaturated fatty acids the long chain (LC-PUFA) in primary central nervous system. DHA is also a major component of cell membranes of retinal photoreceptors.
¨ The brain grows up since the last 3 months of pregnancy to less than 2 years old. Therefore, in the period the baby should receive DHA and ARA in sufficient quantities that can be obtained from milk, ¨ he said.
To obtain the content of DHA and ARA are high in breast milk, pregnant women should certainly be doing a good diet. Research shows that when mothers received additional DHA in their diets, the content of DHA in breast milk will also increase.
During breastfeeding, mothers can improve the quality of breast milk DHA and ARA in it by eating foods that become sources of DHA include fish (eg salmon), fish oil, meat and eggs.
